Event Details

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a system for capturing, storing, analyzing, managing and displaying geographically referenced data. GIS allows its users to visualize, analyze, create and edit spatial data, run searches and queries, perform overlays and other geoprocessing tasks, and present the results of these operations as maps, charts and reports.

ESRI’s ArcGIS Desktop software is a full-featured system that is widely used by GIS departments in both the public and private sectors. While this software can be a powerful tool for local government planning, it can be difficult to operate for the inexperienced user.

The objective of ArcGIS Desktop I is to provide a foundation to those who are new to ArcGIS software or new to GIS in general. This two-day course is taught by an ESRI-authorized instructor and will create a framework for becoming a successful ArcGIS Desktop user.

Those completing this course will be able to

  • Explain what a GIS is and what it can do.
  • Work with and create GIS maps in ArcMap.
  • Access and query a GIS database.
  • Describe two common GIS data structures.
  • Explain what geographic data is, how it is made, and where to get it.
  • Explain what spatial analysis is and solve geographic problems using ArcGIS analysis tools.

Note: There are only 12 spots in this class. SPACES ARE AVAILABLE TO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND SCHOOL DISTRICT EMPLOYEES ONLY ON A FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED BASIS. Participants should be proficient in the use of Windows based software.

The course takes place at the Atlanta Regional Commission offices in downtown Atlanta.  The class begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends by 4:00 p.m. on both days.  Breakfast, lunch and all materials are included.
